about
If I’m being honest, there was a tyme in my late teens, early 20’s, where I actually thought I was living my own punk rock version of “Eddie and the Cruisers.” Copious amounts of drugs and alcohol probably facilitated my grandiose visions at the tyme. I fashioned my old band the Strikeouts in the image of the protagonists from the P.F. Kluge novel, and I adored the score by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band from the films. I wanted the mysticism and the mysteriousness of being in what I considered to be the perfect band. Sheer intensity. Truly heartfelt lyrics. Delivery, but more importantly… image. You need to look like you’re in a band. I still feel that the songs I wrote back then hold up. A starry eyed kid, trying to write the perfect song. I was depressed and miserable. A good match for songwriting, no? I didn’t think much past the next song I “NEEDED” to write. Not much has changed really. I have slightly better coping skills these days, and a more reasonable approach to every day life, but I still consider myself to be a punk rock Peter Pan. I’ve been chasing that feeling most of my life. I figured that to cover an “Eddie…” song would be too on the nose. I love all of Cafferty’s catalogue, so I decided to do a cover of “Tough All Over.” I used it as a way to get used to my new drum programming software before I cut the first DTM full length. I hope I did it justice, John. Thank you for being the voice of my mythical hero. ~Basement
